RQ: What can we do to improve the outdoor area of the school?
Methods: online research into ideas, materials, design, graffiti, artists, pallet projects and planting. Graffiti workshop with ‘Peaceful Protest’, Cardiff.
Findings: The group expressed the way they felt as young boys living in Port Talbot and attending the PRU. They adopted the acronym ‘CLOUD’ for their project. CLOUD: CASTAWAY, LOST, OUTLANDERS, UNKNOWN, DISCONNECTED. Also FORGOTTEN.
The outdoor area was important to them.
Outcomes/Impact:
- Outdoor space transformed by graffiti artwork and planting.
- The group had also been working with another project alongside Little Voices: They donated outdoor gym equipment that was also now in the newly improved outdoor area.
- Discussions with the workers outlined the need for a review into the curriculum within the PRU’s. Often, the courses and content did not benefit the young people when they left the unit. Either construction site safety qualifications run out or due to their young ages, companies are reluctant to offer employment.
Since the end of the project, the school has now closed.
