RQ: How can we help ensure children have water to drink?

Methods: Online research on charities supporting international water projects

Findings:

  • 790 million people in the world struggle to obtain clean water
  • 3 billion people have no access to a toiled (1/3 of the world)
  • You need 3 litres of water a day to survive, the average person in the UK uses 150 litres daily
  • It takes 7900 litres to make a pair of jeans (from growing the cotton to making the end product)
  • There are many different charities working to help villages through raising money for water pumps and sanitation projects

Outcomes/Impact:

The group decided to have an impact day in school for years 3 and 4 (around 80 pupils).  The group researched the different charities they could raise money for and created a presentation with these and water facts for the pupils to decide which one they liked.

They held an assembly for all of KS2 then an impact day – Dwr Cymru attended and ran an interactive workshop with the pupils.  The group ran a role play game simulating life in a village without water and showed the pupils hiw heavy a bucket of water is.

The group planned to have a fundraising day after choosing the charity to help.  Due to several other fundraisers in the calendar they had this scheduled for after the Easter holidays , which did not happen due to Covid 19.  They also received a response from the Refill Wales project just before the lockdown, which would have told them how refill stations for water bottles are being organised across Wales.
